Using an object’s measurement as a three dimensional model

In the reverse engineering technology, the piece’s CAD models are carefully created to transform usable data from acquired point clouds over to an STL file with the help of a 3D laser or an optical scanning system.

When the computer aided design (CAD) gets even more popular, it will become a method to create the piece’s 3d virtual model to use in reserve enginnering, the computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), computer aided engineering and with other softwares.

The object can be measured with 3d scanning technologies coordinate measuring machine (CMM), 3d triangle laser scanner, 3d structural light digitizer scanner or computerized tomography. The measured data is generally represented as a point cloud, lacks topological information by itself  and so it is frequently converted to a more useful format such as a CAD model. Imageware Rapidform or applications such as Geomagic convert the point clouds to formats that are available to use on applications like 3D CAD, CAM, CAE or visualization.
